Katie Morrell’s Woodland Clearing

Katie Morrell: ‘I came across these found photographs at a flea market and was intrigued by the process depicted in the series. There are no captions or date and the viewer is invited to decipher the activity taking place in the woodland clearing. It is only in the final image that smoke is captured and a male figure is identified as the builder of the mound.
I’m interested in the way the viewer approaches these enigmatic images without any prior knowledge. This sense of mystery and intrigue also occurs when people happen upon evidence of dwelling, building or cultivation when walking in woodland areas. With only the trees as witness, the viewer must piece together the activity from what evidence remains.’
