Spruce tree ring slice

Spruce: this spruce grew on a rocky mountainside in Switzerland. The first years of growth are normal, but the subsequent lobate growth was caused by rocks falling down the mountainside, crashing into the tree and destroying the cambium on part of the circumference – the rest of the tree grew slowly around to hide the scar.
