Carol Watts, T.R.E.E., artist’s book with drawings and text: collaboration with Will Montgomery, whose audio material can be heard on the headphones.

Will Montgomery: ‘The audio material presented here is part of a collaboration with Carol Watts entitled T.R.E.E. This is the third work we have made in recent years. On this occasion we decided to begin with sounds rather than words or voice. I was interested in the sounding potential of trees: every creak and judder seems to carry a different dendrochronological weight. I made most of my recordings at two of areas of old London woodland, Coldfall Woods in Haringey and Oxleas Woods in Greenwich. I used a pair of contact mics to create an effect of virtual space, with each piece of moving wood generating different sounds in each channel. Some eq and effects were applied to draw out the sounds I wanted to focus on. In performance the piece will be semi-improvised. This is one example of how T.R.E.E. might emerge.’
