Jeff Hilson’s In the Assarts

IMG_2031Large poster print by Jeff Hilson made for the exhibition, with text drawn from his In the Assarts (Veer, 2010) – some passages available here. Hilson’s poems riff on medieval histories and forest law, creating a modern ‘lingo’ of the forest as well as revisiting previous literary excursions, from Thomas Wyatt to the Sheriff of Nottingham. He draws obsolete terms and language for sylvan rights and customs from the glossary Forests and Chases in England and Wales, c. 1000 to c. 1850.
